ABERDEEN SECRETARIES
ASSOCIATION OF SECRETARIES
Aberdeen Branch (Scotland, UK)
AoS
The Aberdeen Branch was founded at our inaugural meeting held in March 1989.
The Branch annual membership fee is currently £25, which is our first increase in a few years, with a reduced fee of £15 for non-working, retired or aged 60+ members. Our membership now stands at 72 members in our year 2002-2003, however we will be delighted to accept further new members into our Branch.
A meeting is held every month (January excluded) at The Westburn, Westburn Park, Westburn Road, Aberdeen. Our Speakers' Secretaries have always tried to meet the membership preferences and have been able to find some very interesting speakers. A copy of our 2002-2003 syllabus follows for reference. We aim to have visits or outings throughout the year to give us a break from the normal routine. Our December meeting now takes the form of our Christmas Dinner, which gives us all an opportunity to socialise.
Our Committee consists of nine members and on behalf of the Branch they have attended the Joint Committee Meetings, which to date have been held in Newcastle each year, from 2001 bi-annual meetings will be held both in Scotland and England. This meeting brings together all the Branches throughout the UK to discuss future policies etc.
Aberdeen Branch of Association of Secretaries have adopted the use of designatory letters to be used after members' names, namely AoS, prefixed by either: M, A or F. M=Member, A=Associate, F=Fellow.
(Explanation: All are indeed full members of our branch, however M refers to having been trained in the secretarial field, A refers to having been trained in the administrative field (we opened up membership to include all administration fields, opposed to purely secretarial based), F can be gained automatically by becoming a President. F can also be earned by being nominated by the membership for outstanding work they have carried out on behalf of the branch.
Our Annual Convention, which is hosted in turn by each Branch, is open to all members and the Branch is usually well represented. Aberdeen hosted this event in 1998 and was voted to be an outstanding success. Tayside (Dundee) hosted the 2002 event which was held over the weekend of 18-20 October, a fantastic time was had by all who attended.
[nb: Glasgow will be hosting the 2003 Convention between 10-12 October].
Every second year members choose local charities to donate their fund-raising to.
